Taking Care of Elders with Dementia : What Time Is It? Café

Starting 2017, PCSC began to collaborate with social welfare organizations such as the Sisters of Our Lady of China Catholic Charity Social Welfare Foundation to launch the “What Time Is It?” Café initiative.

Elders with dementia work as interns at the stores for one hour a week. Accompanied by store employees, they assist with welcoming consumers, arranging store displays, working with cash register, making coffee and so on. We expect to implement the program to 16 stores by 2021.

In 2020, PCSC introduced the Social Return on Investment (SROI) methodology to measure the results of the “What Time Is It? Café” program and came to the conclusion that that every NT$1 invested in the program created the social value of NT$4.61. The report is the first certified elderly care SROI report in the food retail industry in Taiwan.

The highest total value of the outcomes comes from the elderly with dementia (accounting for 36% of the total results), showing that the program has significant benefits for targeted organizations. The first three outcomes are delaying the progression of dementia, increased dementia literacy, improved family relations, improved PCSC CSR image, and better business performance. The first two achievements show that the program does help alleviate dementia and create a dementia-friendly environment.
